Heat Treating With Ductile Iron

Da Progetto Anita.

Material. The word ductile refers to any type of iron or other strong metal with a ductile characteristic and hence used here to refer to all types of iron, alloys and other metal materials having a ductile characteristic. Some of the ductile iron available are cast iron (a.k.a. 'Copper Tube'), mild steel (a.k.a. 'Stainless Steel' and'tempered steel') and high carbon steel (a.k.a. 'High Carbon Steels' and 'Tungsten Carbide'.)

Heat Treatment. Any ductile iron that is intended for application in heating and cooling system applications undergoes a heat treatment to alter its chemical properties, enhance its elasticity and/or reduce its propensity to develop cracks. There are several ways to heat treat different metals: the most common way to heat treat metals is through application of electromagnetic induction (EMI) which involve passing alternating electromagnetic impulses across the metal, and the second way is by infrared radiation. Other techniques such as gas metalization and electroplating also increase the heat-resistant properties of the metal but these processes are more suitable for high-carbon steels where higher temperatures are needed. Ductile iron tubes are fabricated out of high-carbon steels for heat treatment purposes. Other ductile iron tubes with lower carbon content can be dipped or molded into other materials such as stainless steel or aluminum to serve as heat conduits.

Tubing and Pipe Fittings. As mentioned earlier, the ductile iron tube fittings include pipe fittings that are specially designed to carry either an AC or DC voltage and an insulated wire or cable. These fittings are also known as 'hot spots.' For heating and cooling systems, cold spots are placed in between the hot spots for an easier and more efficient transfer of power and heat. Besides heating and cooling systems, the hot spots can also be used for connecting AC and DC electrical circuits.

Ductile Iron Pipe Fittings. Ductile iron pipes are used for many applications including air conditioning systems, heating and cooling, ventilation, refrigeration and industrial cleaning and treatment. They are also used in many residential applications such as boiler installation and vent opening and for underground water pipelines. Some ductile pipe fittings are designed to withstand extreme environment and pressure conditions to make them suitable for applications in space and other places where they might be exposed to harsh conditions.

Tubing and Plugs. Ductile iron tubing and ductile iron pipes are also used for construction purposes. Tubing is used for installing telecommunications cabling; piping is used in the water and gas supply systems; and plumbing is installed in various buildings including residential houses, offices, hospitals, schools and more. The most common use of ductile iron tubes and fittings is in plumbing and piping, though they are also used in some industrial applications.
